Getting Ready for 2008!

Yes, the Earth Day Groceries Project is on again in 2008! Every year about this time I end up being amazed - and jolted into action - by email queries from people wondering if the Project is still going - next year. You bet it is.

2008 will mark the fifteenth year this activity has been coordinated on the Internet!

A quick way to get started is to go right to the Four Simple Steps page, and start making plans for April 22, 2008.

If you don't see references to 2008 as you look through the website, know that I'm getting there. In the meantime, I'll note updates to the website, right here in this blog. So encourage those who might be interested in participating to subscribe to the rss feed for this blog. And leave questions via comments here, of course.

More coming soon,
Mark Ahlness
project founder and third grade teacher

More still coming in

Two weeks after Earth Day, pictures and reports are still coming in to the Earth Day Groceries Project. I just received a couple of pictures from Discovery School in Cuernavaca, Mexico. This school has participated in the project for several years. Many thanks to Diana Ramos, the principal there. Here is an incredibly beautiful display of some of their artwork.

All caught up (for now)

Pictures and reports submitted to The Earth Day Groceries Project as of Sunday, April 29, are now all caught up. There will be lots more coming in over the next few weeks, so keep checking back on the Reports and Pictures pages for what everybody has been up to. And it's never too late to send in information for your school or organization, because, as we all know, Earth Day is every day! Thanks to all!

Here's one of the hundreds of stunning pictures, just sent in from Pierre Elliott Traudeau Elementary Schoolin Vaudreuil-Dorion, Qc, Canada

Behind on pics, but getting there....

There have been so many pictures sent in this year, there is a bit of a back up... All pictures sent in before Tuesday, April 24 have been posted, at http://www.earthdaybags.org/pictures.htm

I'll catch up on all pictures this weekend. While much of the web site is automated, every report must be approved (and edited, if necessary) one at a time. Each picture page for a school is created manually, and every picture sent in must be resized manually as well.

Thanks so much for your patience, and thanks for taking the time to report in, with words and pictures! - Mark

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day 2007, Burien, WA - 1
Originally uploaded by mahlness.
Just a quick post on Earth Day. Yesterday I was in nearby Burien, Washington, and decided to stop into a grocery store, just to see. I never shop there, don't know anything about the store or its surrounding community...

Hanging above the checkstand area of this Albertsons were dozens of Earth Day Grocery Bags and globes. How cool. Made me wonder how many thousands (hopefully) of other stores will be passing them out, with their beautiful kid messages and artwork.

It is that wondering, coupled with hope, that keeps all of us leaning forward, I think. Happy Earth Day!

Participation Certificates for 2007 now ready

I just updated the Participation Certificate you end up on after sending in a report to the project web site. There are a number of details (important ones, to be sure) that need to be updated, and I inevitably overlook a few each year each year it seems. But somebody always emails me a reminder or question... So, if you notice anything that seems out of date or is not working properly, please let me know via email. Thanks - Mark

Yes, we now have a patch!

Every year I get requests from scouting groups wondering if there is a community service patch available for their group. I'm very pleased to announce there is now an official project patch, offered through Patchwork Designs, Inc. Groups can order the patch (the project logo, from the home page at www.earthdaybags.org) from their online store here. They have a description and picture here.

Reports are coming in

There are reports coming in to the project website already... two from Illinois, one each from Idaho and Quebec.

Less than three weeks to go - Earth Day is April 22nd!

Posters not Available

I'm very sorry to report that the project posters, available free to participating groups for many years, will not be available this year.

The posters were produced for The Earth Day Groceries Project by the American Forest & Paper Association. For financial reasons, they are unable to continue providing posters. They did the design, duplication, and distribution - and the Project is very grateful for their support.

Ready for reports for 2007!

Hello everybody,

This is Mark Ahlness, founder and manager of The Earth Day Groceries Project, letting everyone know that the web site is now ready to accept your reports for 2007. Head over to Send in Your Report on the web site, and let everyone know how it went in your community.

If you know that you have participated before, but there is no report on the web site from that effort, you can send in a report for any year you participated - links are on the same page.

I will try and post at least once a day between now, March 29, through the end of April, so you might want to subscribe to this blog via rss. There will be a LOT of news breaking here! Spread the word!

Happy Earth Day! - Mark

Back in 2007!

Yes indeed, the Earth Day Groceries Project is back on for 2007! Earth Day comes on April 22 every year, and this project will be there as always (since 1994), helping to spread environmental awareness, through the beautiful artwork of schoolchildren on the grocery bags of shoppers on Earth Day everywhere!

Head over to the project web site and check out:
